Poll after poll, show that an approximate two-thirds majority of the public in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom support closer ties and freedom of movement with each other. These group of countries are known as the CANZUK countries:
With two thirds support the CANZUK treaty is thus a mainstream politic idea. However in discussing these ideas and creating a 3,000 member CANZUK Facebook Group we have found our movement to be attacked from an unholy alliance of both the far-left and far-right and as admins we have had to work to hold the middle ground. As a consequence we pinned the following post to the top of our CANZUK Facebook Group:
There has been quite a lengthy divisive debate going on in this group about what CANZUK is and the sentiments some supporters give to non-CANZUK countries is turning people away from the movement… It should be emphasised that CANZUK is not designed to be a “closed system” with CANZUK being created and CANZUK turning away from the rest of the world. Neither is it the creation of a single country called “CANZUK” (although a subset of the group support this and have their group called “CANZUK Federationists”). On the other hand others are jumping ahead, missing the fundamental framework and steps to create CANZUK and trying to integrate the entire Commonwealth, EU and USA or create open borders with the world. This group does not push for CANZUKEU or the Anglosphere (CANZUKUSA).Philip Yip (7th of July 2019)
CANZUK defined by the Canadian Conservative Party via the “CANZUK Treaty” is:
a) Free trade in goods/services
b) Visa-free labour/leisure mobility for citizens, including retirement relocation Reciprocal healthcare agreement modeled on existing AU / NZ / UK bilaterals
c) Increased consumer choice/protection for travel
d) Security coordination
New Zealand ACT Party also have a very similar outline on CANZUK:
a) ACT will continue to be a pro-immigration party, honouring our heritage as a nation of immigrants, while trimming back overly generous entitlements such as pensions after only ten years’ residency.
b) Maintain New Zealand’s values of freedom, property rights and the rule of law as non-negotiable conditions that all immigrants must accept. We should require new citizens to explicitly sign up to these values, as required in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
c) Pursue a free trade and free movement area between Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom (CANZUK).
The recently updated policies for both parties are found below:
I will also state clearly that CANZUK is not only a Conservative lead movement, supporters of CANZUK have different political persuasion and we encourage all members of the group to contact their MPs (whether they like their MP or not) to express their support for CANZUK. Ideally we would get all political parties in all the CANZUK countries to support CANZUK making the implementation of the policy inevitable.
For members that feel this group is “too Conservative” or “too Progressive”, other admins have set up subgroups the “CANZUK Conservatives” and “CANZUK Progressives” Groups respectively.
Let us highlight the caliber of the CANZUKsceptics. First those who seem to have perpetual anger issues:
A CANZUKsceptic has released a video, skeptical of closer ties between these four countries, personally I only endured watching the first 6 minutes of it as its coherence seemed to totally fall apart. However in essence they see it as a means of facilitating uncontrolled open borders with the world. They fail to understand that freedom of movement will only occur with those that have a passport from a CANZUK country, that CANZUK will build upon the security of the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement which already exists between Australia and New Zealand. That the four countries can work together to ensure mutual requirements and a minimum standard for their citizenship tests (which are already remarkably similar) and that one will not be able to access welfare in another CANZUK country until they have worked in the CANZUK country for up until 2 years:
Conversely far left, out of touch academics seem to be against CANZUK, partly because the movement is associated with Brexit and most academics have been paid by EU grants. Ironically in the leading CANZUKsceptic paper, the academics who wrote the paper are in actual fact practicing the objectives of CANZUK by having an academic collaboration between Canada and the United Kingdom… Perhaps the fact they have little faith in CANZUK collaboration reflects their opinion of their own work… As you can see, the vast majority of comments on their website are negative, once again highlighting that they are against mainstream public opinion:
